            Can Reductil Cause Depression?

            Can Reductil cause depression?

We look at the ingredients in Reductil to see if it is linked to depression and other side effects.

            Can Reductil Depression?

            What is Reductil?

If you have been considering taking a weight loss medication in the last several years you most likely have heard of Reductil. Reductil built its reputation around its success for treating obesity.

Reductil's active ingredient, sibutramine, is an appetite suppressant taken orally that has been proven to suppress appetite when administered properly.

As you consume food, your body eventually hits a threshold when enough food has been taken in. When this happens, your brain uses chemicals to signal feelings of satisfaction and fullnes to your body. Over time, these feelings fade and you become hungry again.

Reductil works by increasing the time it takes for those feelings of satisfaction and fullness to wane. This effectively suppresses your appetite and allows you to feel satisfied for longer periods of time after eating.

That sounds great, what is the catch?

Unfortunately, Reductil is only available by prescription. This is for a good reason. The active ingredient, sibutramine, is a powerful drug and has a long list of side effects and contraindications. Some new studies have concluded that these risks outweigh the potential benefits of the drug.

This has led the European Medicines Agency to recommend the suspension of sales and marketing for Reductil across Europe. In North America, the Food and Drug Administration is reviewing several studies concerning the safety of Reductil. The analysis is ongoing and no conclusions have been reached.

            What kind of side effects?

Side effects of Reductil commonly include: dizziness, nausea, dry mouth, constipation, trouble sleeping, drowsiness, menstrual cramps/pain, migraine, or joint/muscle pain.

Reductil can significantly increases the blood pressure of some patients. If you are taking Reductil, it is advisable that you regularly monitor your blood pressure.

Less common, but more severe side effects include: cardiac arrhythmia, paresthesia, mental/mood changes (depression), seizures, problems urinating, abnormal bruising or bleeding, jaundice, chest pain and abnormal vision. If any of these side effects occur, immediately consult a doctor.

In addition to these side effects, people with the following conditions should not take Reductil:

Psychiatric conditions such as bulimia nervosa, anorexia nervosa or serious depression
Patients with a history or susceptibility to drug or alcohol abuse
             Hypertension
Existing damage on heart valves, coronary heart disease, or congestive heart failure
             Hyperthyroidism
             Seizure disorders
             Pregnancy

            What does this mean?

Reductil has a large list of potential side effects, including depression. The overall safety of the drug is in question, and there are a lot of people who would not be advised to take Reductil.
